"Where should I start? Where should I go? How will I know if things will really get better for my patients and myself, if I change my process?" Just a few questions that cause you to end up getting stuck, while making plans. Or even worse, that keep you complaining about the daily frustrations in your work, but do nothing about it. How do you avoid this? Let me ask this: "How do you do this when you go on vacation?" Do you then "blindly" get into the car with your family? Probably not. Of course, you first discuss the destination, trying to find something that will make you all happy, within driving distance by car and within budget. You decide to go to a rustic family campground in Tuscany for two weeks. This beautiful Italian region almost always brings sunshine and crushing views. The campground is a little higher up and therefore less hot. You chose a shady spot from the photos on the website. Now that you know your destination, the journey can begin. So it is with improving your care processes. You need a destination, a point to focus on, so you can set your course without getting lost or wasting your time. After all, you don't want to get into a popping argument with your kids while your husband tries to keep the peace like a blue helmet soldier of the UN. Or, in the case of process improvement, you want to avoid the resistance of your colleagues and avoid making things harder for your patients instead of easier. You have many paper examples of ideas from bureaucrats, where that has gone terribly wrong. So you will have to think about this - beforehand. But, yes ... Where do you get the inspiration? How do you make sure you include everyone in your vision? We've all been on "a vacation from hell" sometime in our lives. A vacation where everything went wrong and nothing matched the beautiful pictures from the brochure. You now know, "This? Never again!" If you do not yet have a clear picture of your ideal process, you can possibly learn something from this experience, by observing your current situation and determining what you absolutely do not want to keep and what, above all, you do want to keep. You make a process diagnosis, so to speak. And exactly for that purpose I have developed a "passport" so that - just like on vacation - you have access to many places to go to and get inspired. With my “Passport to the Gemba* – Learning to See Improvements in Healthcare,”, it’s a lot easier to make such a process diagnosis. Simply by observing what’s going on in your practice, while asking the right questions. All without having meetings or writing reports. It includes a coaching guide, for you to help your colleagues spot improvements, as well. To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the passport, since its first edition in 2014, I fully revised it. I will release this updated version, in December 2024, including a discounted price! PRE-ORDER the ‘Passport to the Gemba*, pocket book version (A6), for you and your team It really looks like a passport 😉 And, for those who can't wait ... You'll get the E-BOOK (.pdf) FOR FREE, immediatly at the moment of purchase of the printed version. * Gemba is Japanese for the real place, where you add value; the workplace. “The ‘Passport to the Gemba’ still [after several years ] accompanies me in my work daily”
